CoSolvent Features (compared with YouTube)

Feature
YouTube Current Features and Roadmap to Upcoming ()Features
Commercial
  Royalty Free
Since CoSolvent employs open source software and iPOV owns its own add-ons, iPOV can work with clients to structure very flexible licensing policies. For example, it is conceivable that a complete, working version could be burned to a DVD or flash drive and distributed at a trade show. That would be financially impossible with most commercial software.
Advertising CoSolvent adds no advertising unless the client wishes to add their own ads.
Media Formats
  Viewable
Images (gif, jpg, png)   CoSolvent can store and display images in most common image formats. Many other formats will be automatically thumbnailed and linked.
Adobe pdf   Each pdf file is stored in a complete, downloadable form, and is also presented in the albums behind a readable image of the document's first page.
Adobe Flash (swf)   Most public video-sharing sites will not accept Adobe swf files because they might contain Actionscript. Since CoSolvent is for private sites, iPOV is able to offer sophisticated support for Flash movies.
Adobe Flash (flv) Flash .flv is the dominant format for web-based video.
  Linkable
    Microsoft Office & Other Files
CoSolvent can store any type of file. Even if it does display the file in a web browser, it provides a link to download the file and the user can elect to provide a thumbnail image to help identify the document.
  Hyperlinks
CoSolvent can treat Web URLs (hyperlinks) just like any other document. Users can add them and supply custom thumbnails. Clicking on the thumbnail will open the linked page.
Upload Formats
Images (various)   A wide variety of images can be stored in CoSolvent. CoSolvent retains the original image at its native size, while generating several other sizes for presentation and thumbnail usage.
    Adobe pdf
When the pdf is uploaded, CoSolvent automatically generates an image of the first page. This helps users to quickly judge the relevance of each pdf item.
Adobe Flash (flv)   Adobe Flash video (flv) is an efficient streaming format and is available from a growing number of video production tools.
Adobe Flash (swf)   iPOV has added a special module to handle uploading and processing of swf files.
MPEG (1, 2, 4) Many less expensive digital and solid-state camcorders produce movies in an MPEG variant.
AVI (many formats) Digital camcorder files, as well as many legacy video files, are encoded as AVIs.
Quicktime A lot of content that originated from Apple editing tools may have been stored as Quicktime.
WMV Microsoft's WMV format is a common output from many less expensive encoders.
Many Audio Formats   Audio records (e.g., of meetings) are common in large enterprises.
SCORM zip file   iPOV plans to support the ability to upload SCORM 1.2/2004 compliant zip packages.
Display Tools
Automatic thumbnailing When video and image files are uploaded, the CoSolvent automatically makes a small thumbnail image that uses as a label when it displays a reference to the item on a web page. Additionally, users can create and upload an image as a thumbnail.
    Video Skimming Thumbnail
Users can click on a video thumbnail and view a short slideshow that illustrates selected frames from the movie. This is much faster than opening the video.
Interactive Markup on Video   The iPOV Flash Virtual Playlist Controller (FVPC) will support the addition of Flash markups on top of the Flash video clip (similar to the pen feature in PowerPoint). Because CoSolvent can accept swf files, the markups can be made a permanent part of the video playback.
Video Mashups   The iPOV FVPC already contains the ability to assemble arbitrary video clips (swf and flv) into ad-hoc 'mashups'. iPOV will make this feature available within \CoSolvent so that any Flash videos in CoSolvent can be combined into a seamless virtual movie.
SCORM Viewer   iPOV will provide a Flash viewer that will let users see the contents of a SCORM-compliant package as an integrated eLearning object. This will be a viewer only. There are no plans to support the capture or reporting of test scores or other personal information.
File Manipulation
Move/Copy/Delete Files   Files, items and albums can be reordered and am
Search
Metatags Users can add tags to videos, images and documents.
Search on tags The metatags are visible to the CoSolvent search engine and will change the tag's appearance of CoSolvent's 'TAG CLOUD'.
Search on script   iPOV will extend CoSolvent's native search engine to cover the contents of subtitle transcripts that can (optionally) accompany the movies in the CoSolvent.
Most Recent CoSolvent keeps track of the user's activity and can present a list of recent items of interest.

Hyperlinks Subject to authorization, users can send links to third parties (e.g., in email) that will connect directly to a specified item in CoSolvent.

Permissions By Group   Administrators can establish arbitrary groups and give them very specific priviledges.
Item Permissions   Content owners (and administrators) can make individual items viewable or hidden to any other groups or individual users.
